El parlamento suizo aprueba la prohibición de cultivos biotecnológicos
Siete meses después de rechazar una propuesta similar, el parlamento suizo aprobó la semana pasada una moratoria de cinco años para la autorización de cultivos transgénicos. Aprobada por una ajustada diferencia de ochenta y tres votos contra setenta y ocho, la norma ahora requiere para entrar en vigor su aprobación por el Senado.
La primera aprobación se atribuye a un miembro socialista del Parlamento, quien forjó una alianza que agruparía los intereses de consumidores, ecologistas y agricultores y que supondría la derrota de los partidos conservadores.
Esta alianza puso en marcha anteriormente una campaña tendente a conseguir la votación a nivel nacional de la moratoria si el Parlamento no hubiese podido aprobarla. Hasta ahora, se han recogido más de 92.000 firmas, cerca de las 100.000 firmas necesarias.
La aprobación final de la moratoria de GM supondría que los agricultores suizos no podrían utilizar una tecnología que, para entonces, ya podría utilizarse en la UE.
A pesar de su localización en el centro de Europa, Suiza no es miembro de la UE ni del Espacio Económico Europeo, a través del cual Islandia, Liechtenstein y Noruega comparten un mercado único con la UE.
Este hecho permite a Suiza mantener cierto grado de autonomía en su toma de decisiones en lugar de verse obligado a armonizar sus leyes con aquéllos de la UE.
Como reacción inmediata a la prohibición, las empresas biotecnológicas del país -entre las cuales están Novartis o Syngenta-, han decidido abrir sus laboratorios al público, en un intento por disipar los miedos suizos a los alimentos transgénicos.
