Almost 90% of complaints made by Spanish users of telecommunications services remain unresolved, according to a report issued to the media in Madrid on March 6 by a consumers organisation on the negative effects of liberalisation on the sector. "Promises of cheaper and better quality service thanks to liberalisation (which took place in 1998) have not been kept", spokesman Antonio Lopez said on behalf of CECU, the Spanish confederation of consumers and users. "The number of operators has multiplied and they have set out to win customers to the detriment of quality of service", Mr Lopez said. CECU, one of the main consumer organisations in Spain, says that in 2002 it registered 15,004 complaints or requests for assistance with operators offering fixed telephony, mobile and internet services, a figure which has seen a continuous increase.
