The intertextual relationship of J. Xoxa’s novels with the Albanian literature

tradition

Abstract

The novel and in particular the realist novel exploits to a large extent some intertextual relations

thatlink itwith intra-literaryand extra-literarytexts (historical,political, sociological).This

internallaw of theliterary process seemsto be clearlyactivated byrealismin awayof its

ownandnotonthebasisof therefunctionalizationandresemanticization of“foreignparts”

of the text as in modern literature. In realist literature, the sources of other texts preserve the

status of the foreign text / embedded in another text structure, as they are found there quoting,

opposing,orholdinganacceptingordenyingaitudetowardsthem.

Even in the three novelsof Jakov Xoxa, although being a writer not inclined to construct

texts on intertextual relations, but on the basis of observation and elaboration of prominent

cases of reality and recent historical time, some interferences from other spheres of discourse

appear, realized on the basis of citation and more rarely on the basis of syncretization and

superimposition of texts on each other.

Introduction

Thestudyofliterarytextsfromtheperspectiveofintertextualrelationswasapplied

continuouslywhenJuliaKristevacametotheconclusionthat““Everytextiscreated

as a mosaic of quotations; each text includes and contextualizes another text… Each

textis theingestion ofa previoustext ”[1].Hence thebelief thatingeneralagood

literaryworkisalwayssupportedandincommunication withotherliteraryworks.

Inthisway each textissuperimposed on other worksofthe same kind asit.But

whatisthe intertextualrelationshipofliterarytextsthathasreplacedthesystemof

inuencesinliterature?

Thisprobleminthe 1960s was addressed by almost all therepresentativesof the

structuralistandpoststructuralistschoolofliteraturewhoreliedheavily ontextual

aspectsandon thedenitionofliteratureas aclosedsystem.Thus,Roland Barthes

wasofthesameopinionasJ.Kristevathat“everytextisanintertext-atextcomposed

ofmanyothertexts”[2]

While in Mihail Bahtin’s novel, although he has not dealt with the study of the

phenomenonof intertext,wend aphenomenaon thediscourse ofthenovel asa

mixtureof discoursesof dierenttypesthat leadsto theconcept ofintertext.“The

language of the novel is a reciprocal dialogue system that illuminates all other

languages.Itcannotbedescribedandanalyzedasasinglelanguageorunique.“[3]

WhileinJoseCortis’snovel,wendthisphenomenontreatedinthechainofpasses

andretrievalof textualelementsfromtextto textatdierenttimes.“Indeed, every

book is nourished, not only by the material that life gives toit, but also, especially,

by the dense humus of literature that has preceded it. Every book encourages other

books, and perhaps genius is nothing but helpful of particular bacteria, the subtle
