TOTAL/PETROFINA ALERT COMMISSION ON MERGER.

The European Commission's Merger Task Force has received a formal notification from the oil companies Total and PetroFina. The terms of the deal would give Total total control over Petrofina, within the meaning of Article 3(1)(b) of Regulation No 4064/89, through a share purchase. The Commission is currently examining the deal and the respective market shares of each of the firms.
