TRANSPORT COUNCIL : SHIPPING: PAPER FORMS TO BE REPLACED BY E-FORMS.

Reporting formalities for ships arriving in or departing from EU ports will be carried out electronically in the future. This is one of the objectives of a proposal for a directive aimed at simplifying administrative procedures in maritime transport, on which the Transport Council approved a general approach, on 17 December 2009. Faxes are still used in the majority of ports. The Council agrees with the Commission's goal of switching to electronic documents even though it allows more time than initially foreseen for the switchover. In their general approach, the states set a timeframe of seven years for implementing reporting formalities using electronic communications (five years after the date of transposition of the future directive, which must be completed two years after adoption).
