Estados Unidos solicita ante la OMC un panel contra la UE sobre los OGMs
Estados Unidos, junto a Argentina y Canadá, ha solicitado formalmente el pasado día 18 de agosto el establecimiento de un panel de la Organización Mundial del Comercio (OMC) que revise la posición de los Quince sobre organismos genéticamente modificados (OGMs), y más concretamente sobre la llamada moratoria sobre la aprobación de los mismos que la UE mantiene de facto desde 1998.
La solicitud del panel , un grupo de expertos que actúan como un tribunal comercial en el seno de la OMC, llega después de varios intentos por parte de la UE, Estados Unidos, Argentina y Canadá de zanjar el contencioso mediante consultas.
Al no llegar a buen puerto la ronda de negociaciones, prácticamente boicoteadas por Estados Unidos, según el ejecutivo comunitario, la solicitud del grupo de expertos o panel el siguiente paso en el procedimiento contencioso.
Agria reacción de los comisarios responsables
La solicitud no ha sentado nada bien en el seno de la Comisión Europea, opuesta a la moratoria contra la aprobación de nuevos OGMs, impuesta por un bloque de Estados Miembros liderados por Francia.
Así, Pascal Lamy, comisario de Comercio aseguró que el diálogo mantenido con Argentina, Canadá y EE.UU. había sido bastante constructivo, por lo que lamentaba este movimiento hacia un pleito innecesario .
El sistema regulador de los transgénicos en la UE es claro, transparente, razonable y no discriminatorio. Confiamos en que la OMC confirmará que la UE respeta completamente sus obligaciones, añádió.
Asímismo David Byrne, Comisario de la UE para la salud y la protección al consumidor lamentó lo sucedido: Solo hace un mes que pusimos al día nuestro sistema regulador de OGMs conforme a los últimos progresos científicos e internacionales. Las normas claras de etiquetado y rastreabilidad (o trazabilidad) son esenciales para ayudar a restaurar la confianza del consumidor hacia los OGM en Europa, dijo.
