Wireless Internet access of "WiFi" represents a real opportunity for the development of the telecommunications sector, according to a study published on May 27 by Mercer Management Consulting, which predicts that the market will take off in 2003. "WiFi is a real strategic opportunity for the sector. It will participate along with ADSL (broadband Internet Access) and 3G (third generation mobile telephony permitting broadband web access) in the broadband revolution", according to the study. Mercer is predicting "rapid and strong growth", boosted by factors such as greater technological maturity, relaxation of the regulatory framework and the further development of the Internet (broadband and mobile). The study, conducted in the United States and Europe in April 2003, focused on "hot spots", high people-flow areas (stations, hotels, conference centres...) where radio terminals have been installed permitting wireless internet connections within a radius of 150 metres.
