The amount of working time that employees spend in vocational training varies widely across the EU, according to figures just released by Eurostat. It is widely recognised that developing skills and abilities through vocational training at work is an essential part of lifelong learning and reflects the role that businesses play in tackling unemployment. However, the most vocational training that workers can expect to receive is 14 hours per 1,000 hours worked, and that only if they happen to be working in Denmark. At the bottom of the scale is Portugal with 4 hours per thousand worked and in the candidate countries this sinks even further to 2 hours in Bulgaria, Poland, Latvia...
