Statistical Note
The report contains statistical data from the PIRLS 2016 and the ICCS 2016 data bases. All PIRLS
and ICCS statistical data presented in graphics in the text together with the standard errors and the
explanatory notes are available below.
PIRLS 2016
PIRLS 2016 (Progress in International Reading Literacy Study) assesses the achievement of students
in reading and collects considerable background information on how education systems provide
educational opportunities for their students, as well as information on the factors that influence how
students use these opportunities.
The PIRLS target population is the grade that represents four years of schooling, counting from the
first year of ISCED Level 1, which corresponds to the fourth grade in most countries.
