MIDIS II survey are ava ilable online.98
Selection criteria
EU-MIDIS II respond ents were screened for el igibility
by self-identif‌ication. Grou ps to be surveyed in each of
the countries were selec ted based on multiple criteria,
including the si ze of the target populat ion, feasibility
of carrying out a survey wit h the respective targ et
population, th e group’s risk of experiencing ‘racia lly’,
‘ethnically’ or ‘religiously’ motivated discrimination
and victimisa tion, their vuln erability for b eing at risk
of social exclusion and co mparability with previou s FRA
surveys. Target groups of immi grants and descendants
of immigrants (often referred to as f‌i rst- and second-
generation respondents) were identified by asking
potential respondents about their country of birth and
their parents’ countr y of birth. Clearly def‌ine d countries
and regions of origi n were used for the different groups
covered in each of the countries. To be considered
amember of on e of the target groups of i mmigrants
and descendants of immigrants, respondents either had
to be born in one of the sel ected countries of or igin
(‘f‌irst generation’ ) or one or both of their p arents had
to be from one of these countr ies (‘second generation’).
For purposes of the su rvey, immigrants and d escend-
ants of immigra nts encompass the following:
‘Immigrants’ in clude persons wh o were not born in
an EU Member State or an EE A/EFTA country (Liec h-
tenstein, Iceland, No rway and Switzerlan d), have
their usual place of reside nce in the territory of the EU
Member State where the su rvey was conducted , and
had been living in t he survey country fo r at least the
previous 12 months.
‘Descendants of im migrants’ are pers ons who were
born in one of the cur rent 28 EU Member States or
EEA/EFTA countries, w hose usual place of residence
was in the territor y of the EU Member State where the
survey was conducte d, and who had at least one parent
not born in an EU or EE A/EFTA country (Liechtenstein,
Iceland, Norway a nd Switzerland).
In some EU Member Sta tes, EU-MIDIS II inter viewed
‘recent immigrants’, namely, persons who immigrated
to an EU Member State in the 10 yea rs before the sur-
vey (i.e. after 2004), whose us ual place of residence
is in the territory of t he EU Member State where th e
survey was conducte d, and who had been l iving in
the survey country fo r at least 12 months before the

interview. The countr y of birth of ‘recent immigran ts’
can be any country other t han the EU-28 and other than
the EEA/EFTA countries.
EU-MIDIS II covered the following groups under the
concept ‘immigrants a nd descendants of immigrants’:
nImmigrants a nd descendants of im migrants from
Turkey (in 6 EU Member States);
nImmigrants a nd descendants of im migrants from
North Africa (in 5 E U Member States);
nImmigrants a nd descendants of im migrants from
Sub-Saharan Africa (in 1 2 EU Member States);
nImmigrants a nd descendants of im migrants from
South Asia and A sia (in 4 EU Member States);
nRecent immigrants f rom other non-EU/EFTA coun-
tries (in 2 EU Member State s).
Data collection
The f‌ieldwork was condu cted by Ipsos MORI, a large
international sur vey company based in the United K ing-
dom, under the su pervision of FR A according to strict
quality control proced ures particip ating in intervi ewer
training sessions and observing data collection activities.
The main intervi ew mode was Computer A ssisted
Personal Interv iew (CAPI)– face-to-face inter views
administered by interviewers using acomputerised
questionnaire. The English source questionnaire, devel-
oped by FRA, was tr anslated into 22 EU la nguages as
well as into Arabic, Kurd ish, Russian, Somali, Tamazight
and Turkish. Intervi ewers were specially trained for the
survey, including cult ural and ethical trainin g. Wherever
possible or necessa ry, interviewers with the same eth-
nic background and/or gender conducted the interviews
to increase responsiveness a mong the target groups.
Sampling
Most of the target grou ps in EU-MIDIS II can be consid-
ered as ‘hard-to-reach’ for survey research– in terms of
being relatively smal l in size and/or dispersed– and due
the absence of sampl ing frames of the ta rget groups.
Whenever possible, a sample was drawn fro m asam-
pling frame covering th e target populatio n. However,
the opportu nities to sample th e target populati on dif-
fered greatly across Member St ates due to different
availability of s ampling fram es and distribu tion of the
target group in the cou ntries (i.e. list of persons that can
