* Telecommunications Council on March 8

EU Telecommunications Ministers will meet in Brussels on March 8. Items on the session agenda include:

- the adoption of conclusions on the id-term review of the eEurope 2005 action plan;

- an exchange of views in the situation regarding the electronic communications sector in Europe and the adoption of conclusions on this theme;

- and the adoption of conclusions on unsolicited commercial communications (spam) and the follow-up to the World Summit on the Information Society.

* International symposium on electrical, electronic and computer engineering

The second international symposium on electrical, electronic and computer engineering will take place from March 11 to 13, 2004 in Nicosia, Cyprus. The symposium will provide an opportunity for academics, researchers and professionals to present recent developments in the electrical, electronic and computer engineering fields and provide a forum for discussions and exchange of experience. It is hoped that the symposium will guide future research and development in these fields and accelerate efforts to develop new techniques and approaches.

Specific topics for discussion will include:

- communication systems;

- cryptography and network security;

- power generation, transmission and distribution;

- automation and controls.

There will be also exhibition displaying new technological products in each of the three fields of engineering.

* Third European business summit to focus on research and innovation

The European Commission, UNICE and the Federation of enterprises in Belgium are to jointly host the third European business summit on March 11 and 12, in Brussels, Belgium. The summit will focus on "research and innovation: a European strategy for more growth and jobs", and is described as the most important dialogue in Brussels between leading business people and European policy makers. Specifically, the event will address the question of whether the EU can meet the objective it has set itself of becoming the most competitive economy by 2010, or whether the Lisbon goal is a "mere incantation with little or no implementation".
