COMMISSION APPOINTS NEW JRC HEAD AND DEPUTY DIRECTOR-GENERAL FOR ENTERPRISE.

A 50-year-old Irishman, Barry McSweeney, has been appointed by the European Commission to take over from Herbert Allgeier (who retired last year) as the Director-General of the Joint Research Centre (JRC). Mr McSweeney joined the Commission in 1995 as Head of Unit at DG Research and was appointed Director in 2000 at the JRC in Ispra (Italy) where he was responsible for the Institute for Health and Consumer Protection dealing with GMOs, food safety and quality, biomedical applications, chemical safety, in vitro tissue culture and telematics for pharmaceutical regulations.Also on 20 March, the European...
