An amendment has been made to the first footnote in this article, following publi-
cation in European Law Journal volume 17 issue 4. The online version of the article has
been corrected.
The main text amendment is the replacement of the phrase ‘the first part’ with ‘this
evocative description of ethical dilemmas resulting from conflicting ethical obligations’
as a more precise acknowledgement of G.W.F. Hegel’s original text.
