ELECTRONICS: EU EXTENDS ANTI-DUMPING DUTIES ON TELEVISION SETS IMPORTED FROM >TX ASIA.

The EU has decided to extend its anti-dumping duties on television sets imported from a number of Asian countries. The move is an amendment to the 1990 and 1991 duties on small-screen colour television sets from China and South Korea, extending the duties until April 2000.

The decision aligns the measures with the 1995 duties - as high as 44.6% - on all colour television sets from China (44.6%), South Korea (15.1%), as well as Singapore (23.6%), Malaysia (23.4%) and Thailand (29.8%) on certain televisions. The Commission says the move is necessary as all colour TVs are now considered to form one product. It also means an end to duties on various individual manufacturers: South Korea's Samsung and LG, and Singapore's Funai and Hitachi subsidiary, which were at a minimal level: the anti-dumping rules stipulate that the EU apply no duties on imported goods with dumping margins found to be less than 2%.
