Given the limited progress on gender equality 15 years on from the Beijing World Conference on Women, MEPs adopted, on 24 February, a resolution that pushes this question higher up on the political agenda."Despite the efforts made, the strategic objectives of the Beijing platform for action have not been achieved and inequality and gender stereotypes persist, with women remaining in a position subordinate to men in the areas addressed in the platform" [for example, the gender dimension in education, poverty, conflicts, the economy, power - Ed], states rapporteur Eva-Britt Svensson (EUL-NGL, Sweden). The resolution, inspired by oral questions submitted to the European Parliament by the Council and the Commission, is based on achievement of the objectives of the Fourth World Conference on Women, Equality, Development and Peace', held in Beijing, in 1995.
