EU SURVEY: CITIZENS DIVIDED YET BACK EURO.

The report, which covers the period April to May 2001, shows that the level of support for membership fell two per cent from the last survey in 2000, making the number of EU citizens in favour of EU membership a minority. This contrasts sharply with just a decade ago when 72% of citizens backed EU membership. While only 48% of the EU's citizens are in favour of enlargement, 73% of EU citizens favour a common defence and security policy.Of the European institutions, the European Parliament is the most trusted by citizens, 52% of those questioned expressed confidence in the institution.
