A tenor de la información enviada por las autoridades españolas, la mina a cielo abierto del Valle de Laciana (Villablino, León) no ha recibido contribución alguna del Fondo Europeo de Desarrollo Regional.
La mina obtuvo el permiso necesario para su explotación y la empresa encargada de su funcionamiento percibe el apoyo financiero previsto en el marco legal relativo al sector de la minería.

(2003/C 28 E/173) PREGUNTA ESCRITA E-1893/02 de Marjo Matikainen-Kallström (PPE-DE) a la Comisión (1 de julio de 2002) Asunto: Ayudas regionales y ampliación Está previsto que, en 2004, la Unión Europea se amplíe con diez nuevos Estados miembros. En el primer informe provisional de la Comisión sobre la cohesión económica y social se tuvo en cuenta esta consideración, y la Comunicación presenta directrices relativas al futuro contenido de la política de cohesión.
La población de los países candidatos es, comparada con la de la Unión Europea, pobre y dependiente de la agricultura. Al efectuar cálculos, tomando como base una Unión de 25 Estados miembros, parece que, como consecuencia de la ampliación, en siete de los Estados miembros actuales, por lo menos una región perderá el estatuto de objetivo 1. Además, la Comisión no tiene previsto continuar con el objetivo 2 después de la ampliación. Se ha subrayado que, en el futuro, la política se centrará principalmente en las regiones más pobres de la Unión Europea, que, después de la ampliación, se situarán en los nuevos Estados miembros.
Entre las regiones que dejarían de tener el estatuto de objetivo 1, está, por ejemplo, la región de Finlandia Oriental, que seguirá necesitando la ayuda comunitaria también después de la ampliación. ¿Qué medidas tiene previsto adoptar la Comisión para apoyar a las regiones más pobres de los Estados miembros actuales y preservar su viabilidad?
