Microsoft will comply with European opinion on privacy on the internet by reducing from 18 to six months the length of time that it keeps certain personal information of internet users for technical and commercial ends "when the others also do it and if they make them anonymous". This is what John Vassallo, Microsoft's advisor for European affairs, told AFP, on 9 December 2008. He was not available for comment. The main European player, Google, had announced, on 9 September, its intention to make the IP data of its users anonymous after nine months instead of 18.
