EP Delegation to discuss data protection and CIA renditions in US Congress

The Civil Liberties Committee will send a delegation of 9 MEPs to Washington on 16-18 April to discuss with US Congress current issues linked to the transfer of data for security purposes such as the case of passenger name records (PNR) in transatlantic flights and the share of information contained in international bank transfers (SWIFT case).

MEPs will also brief the members of the US Congress Subcommittee on international organisations on the work undertaken by Parliament's temporary committee investigating CIA illegal activities in Europe, on Tuesday 17 at 2pm (local time)

The 9-Member delegation is made up of:

Meetings are confirmed with John Bellinger, (Department of State, legal advisor), as well as Congressmen Jerrold Nadler (House Judiciary Committee), Tom Lantos (chairman, House Committee on Foreign Affairs), Loretta Sanchez (expert on terrorism, House Armed Services Committee) and Shelley Berkley (chairwoman, House Committee on Transatlantic Legislator's Dialogue) with several other meetings planned.

A press conference will round off the three days visit, to be held at 12:30 on Wednesday, 18 April in Washington.

EP Citizen's Forum on the Future of Europe

As part of its contribution to the debate on the future of Europe and the period of reflection following the no' votes on the constitution in France and the Netherlands, the European Parliament is organising a series of citizen's forums to enable members of the public directly to enter the debate on the main issues. This forum, in Aachen, will focus on: 'Having our say on Europe', on the German Presidency, Health and consumer protection, Constitution, and Enlargement.

Inter-Parliamentary Colloquium with MEPs and MPs of the EU's Candidate Countries

EU energy policy and the candidate countries

Members of the European Parliament and national MPs from Croatia, the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia and Turkey will meet on 16 and 17 April to discuss European energy policy. Topics for debate will include cooperation under the Energy Community Treaty and the priorities of the canididate countries in the common energy policy being devised by the EU.

Public hearings

Towards an EU Strategy on the Rights of the Child

Joint meeting of the Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs, Committee on Women's Rights and Gender Equality, Committee on Employment and Social Affairs, Committee on Culture and Education, Sub-Committee on Human Rights, Committee on Development and Committee on Legal Affairs.

The Civil Liberties Committee will host the public hearing 'Towards an EU strategy on the rights of the child'. MEPs be joined by experts from the Council of Europe, UNICEF and NGOs including Save the Children, Plan Europe, Terre des Femmes, Eurochild or ANAR foundation (Ayuda a Ninos y Adolescentes en Riesgo). The debates will take place in the Plenary Chamber and involve attendance and participation of children.

The main topics of discussion will include: the protection of children's rights, implementing children's participation in the EU, the legal framework on parental abduction of children, violence against children, child refugees and asylum seekers, child poverty and social inclusion.
