"From Policy to Practice", will be the main theme of the eGovernment conference, jointly organised by the Commission and the Belgian Presidency, to take place in Brussels on November 29-30. Erkki Liikanen, the Commissioner responsible for Enterprise and Information Society, Luc van den Bossche and Rik Daems, the Belgian Ministers respectively responsible for Public Administration and Telecommunications will all participate at the event. The conference is part of the joint efforts of the European Commission and the Belgian Presidency to drive forward the deployment of eGovernment services in Europe. It will exclusively feature interactive eGovernment on-line services currently running and being offered to European businesses and citizens. The objective is to highlight how citizens and businesses can reap concrete benefits from on-line Government services.The eGovernment conference will bring together Ministers and high-level representatives of administrations (local, regional and national) from the Member States, the European Free-Trade Area (EFTA) and the candidate countries. The conference will take place just after a meeting of the Directors General of Europe's Ministries of Public Administration, taking place in Bruges on November 26-27. Administrations will demonstrate examples of interactive eGovernment on-line services currently offered to businesses and citizens in Europe. These examples are to be chosen through an informal call for nominations by the Member States that will be launched on July 10.eGovernment is one of the major components of the eEurope Action plan, which was endorsed by the Member States in June 2000. The plan includes benchmarking of performance in the Member States and monitoring of progress. Progress thus far in the European Union has been very unequal.*New treatment solutions for information society wasteIFAT, the international waste disposal and environment technology fair is to be staged in Munich, Germany, from May 13 to 17, 2002, focusing on growing volumes of electronic waste, means of reducing such waste and ecological treatment options.
