La Comisión propone prorrogar las medidas transitorias contra la EEB
La Comisión Europea ha formulado una propuesta, que tendrá que ser aprobada por el Consejo y el Parlamento Europeo, consistente en prorrogar la vigencia de las medidas provisionales para controlar la extensión de la EEB y la contaminación de la cadena alimentaria. En virtud de dicha propuesta, que fue aprobada el 5 de marzo, estas medidas, que entraron en vigor el 1 de julio de 2001 y debían expirar el 30 de junio este año, continuarán en vigor hasta julio de 2005. Entre las referidas medidas provisionales se encuentran, entre otras, la prohibición de alimentar con proteínas animales a ganado destinado a la alimentación humana y la eliminación de la cadena alimentaria de los denominados Materiales Específicos de Riesgo (MER) entre los que se incluyen la médula, el cerebro, los ojos, las amígdalas y el intestino.
La obligación de retirar los MER de vacuno, ovino y caprino afectará tanto a los Estados miembros como a terceros países que exporten sus productos a la Unión Europea, salvo aquellos en los que el riesgo de presencia de EEB se ha calificado como "muy poco probable". Los países calificados así actualmente son: Argentina, Australia, Botswana, Brasil, Chile, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Islandia, Namibia, Nueva Zelanda, Nicaragua, Panamá, Paraguay, Singapur, Suazilandia, Uruguay y Vanuatu. Finalmente, la prórroga afecta también a la restricción de exportaciones del Reino Unido y Portugal.
