REDING PROPOSES ERASMUS PROGRAMME FOR AUDIOVISUAL SECTOR.

European Education and Culture Commissioner Viviane Reding proposed on November 4 in Paris plans for an Erasmus programme to help develop the audiovisual sector. During parliamentary meetings on the audiovisual sector focusing on "a new way forward for the audiovisual sector in Europe", Mrs Reding said: "I would like to be able to put in place for the audiovisual sector something which has worked so well in the field of education (Editors Note: Erasmus is a programme to encourage student exchanges with the EU), an audiovisual Erasmus to train professionals in both the public and private sectors". Mrs Reding said that "the balance between the private and the public is a very important element in the European identity", and she believed that in this area it is necessary to "live and let live in equilibrium". Mrs Reding said she believed the Television without Frontiers Directive, adopted in 1989 and amended in 1997, was "working well".
