Simon McGarr is a practising lawyer in Ireland and a consultant to an international client base on data protection issues.


He has been involved in landmark cases developing Data Protection law for the whole EU, including the first case to establish the legal force of the Charter of Fundamental Rights, and was sent by the Irish High Court to the CJEU to represent his NGO client, Digital Rights Ireland in the original Schrems I Case. He focuses much of his work on helping organisations to understand their data protection needs. He is regularly looked to for expert comment on data protection matters by Yahoo Finance, Politico.eu, QZ.com, RTE, TRT World, and across national Irish media.


He is a regular guest lecturer at ERA, the EU’s Academy of European Law, on data protection law and has also guest lectured at Trinity College Dublin, Dublin City University, University College Dublin, National University of Ireland Maynooth, and NUI Galway, as well as the UK House of Lords.


He is a Senior Policy Advisor to the global Messaging, Malware, Mobile AntiAbuse Working Group (M3AAWG) and a noted conference speaker on data protection. He remains in practice as a lawyer with McGarr Solicitors and is the Director of Data Compliance Europe
