TOP SOLANA AIDE TO BECOME MERKEL ADVISOR.

One of the top diplomats working for the EU's foreign policy chief Javier Solana is moving to become diplomatic advisor to new German Chancellor Angela Merkel. Christoph Heusgen, Director of the EU's Policy Planning Unit, which provides strategic advice to Mr Solana, will counsel Mrs Merkel on foreign policy issues including the CFSP. Mr Heusgen, a member of Angela Merkel's CDU party, replaces SPD member Reinhard Silberberg, who moves to become State Secretary in the Foreign Ministry under fellow Social Democrat and former Schroder advisor, Frank-Walter Steinmeier.
