UNEMPLOYMENT STABILISES AT 9.8% IN EU IN NOVEMBER.

Unemployment in the European Union remained stable at 9.8% in November 1998, according to the latest data released on January 7 by the Luxembourg-based Statistics Office of the European Union (Eurostat). It stood at 10.5% in November 1997. The corresponding rate for Euroland (the EU countries minus Greece, Denmark, Sweden and the United Kingdom) stood at 10.8%, compared with 11.6% in November 1997. In concrete terms, these rates mean there were 13.8 million people out of work in Euroland, compared with some 16.5 million in the 15 countries of the European Union as a whole.
