Respuesta del Sr. Byrne en nombre de la Comisión (22 de marzo de 2001) De acuerdo con el asesoramiento científico de que dispone la Comunidad, los estudios epidemiológicos indican un riesgo más elevado, en torno al 10 %, de encefalopatía espongiforme bovina (EEB) en terneros nacidos de vacas afectadas de esta enfermedad en los 12 meses siguientes a la aparición de signos clínicos de EEB. No obstante, no se conoce el mecanismo de transmisión y no se dispone de pruebas sobre la transmisión materna de la EEB en el ganado en el sentido tradicional. Aunque la transmisión por vía materna sea real, al parecer, su importancia comparada con la transmisión por los piensos es menor.
Los tests de EEB existentes se utilizan para detectar casos de EEB clínica o de animales infectados cercanos al estadio clínico. Las pruebas no pueden detectar la infección en etapas tempranas del período de incubación, por lo que un resultado negativo de un test no constituye una garantía de que el animal no esté infectado. Por lo tanto, la medida más importante de protección directa de la salud pública es la eliminación de los materiales especificados de riesgo de EEB en el momento del sacrificio. Por el momento no es posible establecer el porcentaje de animales que dieron resultado negativo en las pruebas y que, sin embargo, estaban realmente infectados.
La Comisión no dispone de la información que pide Su Señoría en el tercer punto de su pregunta pero, hasta el momento, no se ha comprobado ningún caso de transmisión de la encefalopatía espongiforme transmisible humana (EET) por vía materna.
