1.1. Statistical unit
The statistical unit for indicator 1 is the num-
ber of victims. A victim is ‘a natural person who
has suered harm, including physical, mental
or emotional harm or economic loss which was
directly caused by a criminal oence, as well as
the family members of a person whose death
was directly caused by a criminal oence and
who have suered harm as a result of that per-
son’s death’ (34).
1.2. Type of oence
The oence covered by indicator 1 is that of inti-
mate partner violence, dened as any act of phys-
ical, sexual, psychologic al or economic violence
that occurs between former or current spouses or
partners, whether or not the perpetrator shares or
has shared the same residence with the victim’ (35).
1.3. Reference area
Data and metadata for indicator 1 were col-
lected at national level for 27 Member States
and the three devolved jurisdictions that are
the lawful authorities in the policy area of law
and order in the United Kingdom (England and
Wales, Northern Ireland and Scotland).
