12.1. Statistical unit
The statistical unit for indicator 12 is the num-
ber of sentenced men. In the context of vio-
lence against women, sentenced persons are
dened as persons found guilty by any legal
body authorised to pronounce a conviction
under national criminal law, whether or not the
conviction was later upheld’ (69).
12.2. Type of oence
The oence covered by indicator 12 is intimate
partner violence, dened as any act of physical,
sexual, ps ychological or economic violence that
occurs between former or current spouses or
partners, whether or not the perpetrator shares
or has shared the same residence with the vic-
tim’ (70).
12.3. Reference area
Data and metadata for indicator 12 were collec-
ted at the national level for 27 EU Member States
and the three devolved jurisdictions which are
the lawful authorities in the policy area of law
and order in the United Kingdom (England and
Wales, Northern Ireland and Scotland).
