10.1. Statistical unit
The statistical unit for indicator 10 is the number
of protection orders. Protective orders in the
context of violence against women are dened
as a legal injunction that requires an oender
to refrain from doing certain acts and to stay
away from the victim’ (65). Protection orders c an
be adopted under criminal or civil laws. A pro-
tection order represents a fast legal remedy to
protect the persons at risk of any form of vio-
lence by prohibiting, restraining or proscribing
certain behaviour by the perpetrator.
Indicator 10 further disaggregates protection
orders by the number of applications and the
number granted. It also distinguishes between
the type of court where the application was
made and granted (i.e. criminal courts and civil/
family courts).
10.2. Type of oence
The oence covered by indicator 10 is intimate
partner violence, dened as any act of physical,
sexual, ps ychological or economic violence that
occurs between former or current spouses or
partners, whether or not the perpetrator shares
or has shared the same residence with the vic-
tim’ (66).
